Manipur Paralysed by Shutdowns, Protests, Candlelight Vigils
Shutdowns, rallies, and vigils across valley and hill districts highlight rising tensions and security concerns in Manipur.

IMPHAL- Manipur witnessed widespread disruptions on April 23 as coordinated shutdowns, mass rallies, and candlelight vigils were held across both valley and hill districts, reflecting a sharp escalation in tensions following recent incidents of violence.
In the Imphal Valley, normal life came to a halt on the final day of a five-day shutdown called by Meira Paibis. Markets remained closed in Imphal, Bishnupur, and Thoubal, while public transport services were largely absent.
A women-led march organised by All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation took place in Bishnupur, with participants demanding action following the April 7 bomb blast in Tronglaobi that resulted in the deaths of two children.

In the hill districts, the situation remained tense as the United Naga Council enforced a three-day shutdown across Naga-inhabited areas, including Senapati, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul.
Thousands gathered in Ukhrul headquarters for a solidarity march and candlelight vigil, mourning individuals reportedly killed on April 18 along National Highway-202. Similar protests were reported in Senapati, where residents organised a torch rally condemning the recent killings.

The unrest coincided with the observance of Khongjom Day, marking the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War. Official events at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex were held under heavy security, amid protests organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, leading to brief confrontations between demonstrators and security personnel.
The state government has also faced criticism over the implementation of Section 43A of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which expands powers of certain police officers. While rights groups have termed the measure excessive, authorities have defended it as necessary to address rising insurgent activity.

In response to the volatile situation, mobile internet services have been suspended in several sensitive districts to curb the spread of misinformation. Security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles, continue to maintain a strong presence in designated buffer zones between valley and hill areas.
The developments indicate a continuing fragility in the region’s security environment, with both civil society groups and authorities navigating a complex landscape of unrest, public mobilisation, and administrative response.
